Rubbish Under Miner Island

This is the latest e-mail regarding sorting a clean up under the Island. The owners of the land still insist they are not responsible for the rubbish, but have agreed to a ‘one off’ clean. At least we can sort it once and for all and hopefully put up some netting to stop any future rubbish being thrown down there.

This one is still developing, so please watch for further updates.

Dear Councillor Wade

Many thanks for the email.

Railway Paths Ltd (RPL) has not been able to accept that the litter problem is theirs to resolve. This is because RPL has been advised that the litter (which emanates from the highway on Walsall Council land), constitutes a nuisance. RPL’s legal advice is that under Tort, a landowner allowing a nuisance to escape from their land (in this case litter) is liable for any damage caused to the neighbouring land by that nuisance.

However, RPL is willing to allow the Town Partnerships team to organise a one-off litter clearance, undertaken by volunteers.

If you think this is something the town Partnerships team would be willing and able to run please let me know and I would be pleased to meet them to discuss arrangements.

Brownhills – Pelsall Cycle Track

I attended a meeting on Monday 15th regarding the Cycle Path from Brownhills to Pelsall. We had representatives from Sustrans, the Council, Brownhills Local Committee members and Sustrans volunteers. The Centro representative was unable to make it so we will seek a further meeting in due course. Unfortunately, the discussions regarding the Cycle path were not overly productive with many barriers seemingly in front of us to open this stretch up. Not over yet , however, still have other outlets and ideas that we can explore.

What was good, however, was that we may be finally on the way to getting under the Miner Island cleared, (pictures below courtesy of Brian Stringer) as the pictures below show just how bad it’s become. Sustrans, the council and volunteers will now work together to get this cleared and then we can hopefully keep it maintained. Once again, we’ll see what happens in the coming weeks and months.

Pelsall Road Carriageway Resurfacing

Had this e-mail from the council. Unfortunately, the Miner Island is not on this works:

Hello Councillor
All fine thank you. In relation to the Miner Island it is not intended to include the island at this stage. The resurfacing of Pelsall Road is part of challenge funding where the grant is specifically allocated to certain schemes identified during the application process. The island itself wasn’t included and would add significant cost and logistical issues. I will however ask the engineer to take a view on what could be done and will let you know.

We’ll keep an eye on the island also and if it gets any worse, we’ll campaign to get it sorted.
